We hear it all the time "Fats are bad" but are they? In this article, we will tell you the truth about fats and how they can assist you with weight loss.
What is Fat?
Fats are divided into two main categories: Saturated and Unsaturated fats.
To explain the two apart is based on the source of where this fat is obtained.
Different Types of Fat
Saturated fats are mostly found in sweet and savoury foods. Animal products such as fatty cuts of meat, cheese, and confectionaries like biscuits. Oh, side note, Coconut oils and creams are not part of good fats.
Unsaturated fats can mainly be found in plants and fish. It gets a bit more complicated here. This can then be divided into monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
Monounsaturated fats protect your heart by providing good HDL (discussed in a different article) cholesterol by lowering bad LDL in your body. Monounsaturated fats are found in foods like avocados, olive oil, and almond nuts.
Polyunsaturated fats are divided into Omega-3 and 6 which can be produced in the body but can also be consumed in tiny quantities from foods such as corn, trout, and salmon.
How much does your body need?
You should typically consume between 20% to 35% of calories from fat daily, assuming you consume 2000 calories per day.
That is estimated at 44 to 77 grams of fat daily.
Let us be clear on this myth though, cutting out saturated fat is not a necessity but a recommendation as it can cause health issues further down your walk of the thing called life but come on, who can resist a smooth and creamy Swiss chocolate now and then.
The general rule of thumb: More unsaturated than saturated.
